1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Humph!" ejaculated Hurstwood, who had been so sturdilydisplaced.
2. The wavering of a mind under such circumstances is an almostinexplicable thing, and yet it is absolutely true. Hurstwoodcould not bring himself to act definitely. He wanted to thinkabout it--to ponder over it, to decide whether it were best. Hewas drawn by such a keen desire for Carrie, driven by such astate of turmoil in his own affairs that he thought constantly itwould be best, and yet he wavered. He did not know what evilmight result from it to him--how soon he might come to grief. The true ethics of the situation never once occurred to him, andnever would have, under any circumstances.
3. Carrie heard this, flushing with thankfulness. She liked thislittle gaslight soldier. She seemed so experienced and self-reliant in her tinsel helmet and military accoutrements.
4. "I will," said a voice.
5. "Not very, I hope," said Carrie.
6. So his going was crystallising into staying. What was she to donow? Evidently she would be facing the world in the same old waywithin a day or two. Her clothes would get poor. She put hertwo hands together in her customary expressive way and pressedher fingers. Large tears gathered in her eyes and broke hotacross her cheeks. She was alone, very much alone.

1. "Aw, get out," said the man, who happened to be a common typehimself. "You're no good. I'll give you nawthin'."
2. "Won't you come along with me?" he said, as if there was greatdanger that she would not. "You won't need to do anything buttravel with me. I'll not trouble you in any way. You can seeMontreal and New York, and then if you don't want to stay you cango back. It will be better than trying to go back to-night."
3. "Nothing's GOT into me," she said, flaming. "I want that money. You can do your swaggering afterwards."
4. "Of course I am," said Lola; "but what can I do? I haven'tanything."
5. "Could you give me something to do for a few days?" he said."I'm in a position where I have to get something at once."
6. "Could you let me have a meal ticket?" he asked with an effort.

1. "Why don't you take anything, George, temporarily?" she said."What difference does it make? Maybe, after a while, you'll getsomething better."
2. One afternoon they met at the Vances' accidentally, and began avery friendly conversation. She could hardly tell why the one-time keen interest in him was no longer with her.Unquestionably, it was because at that time he had representedsomething which she did not have; but this she did notunderstand. Success had given her the momentary feeling that shewas now blessed with much of which he would approve. As a matterof fact, her little newspaper fame was nothing at all to him. Hethought she could have done better, by far.
3. "Do you find these satisfactory?" observed Mr. Withers.
4. He went over to the baby where it was playing on the floor andbegan to poke his finger at it.
5. "How do you know?" questioned Drouet reflectively.
6. Carrie remembered her triumph in the room. She tried to thinkshe could to it.

1. Hurstwood winced the least bit. The real thing was slightlyworse than the thoughts of it had been.
2. "I wish I could travel," said the girl, gazing idly out of thewindow.
3. "That's right," said the drummer.
4、 "Come on," said Drouet. "Brace up. What are you afraid of? Goon out there now, and do the trick. What do you care?"
5、 Hurstwood recovered himself, pale and trembling. It was becomingserious with him now. People were looking up and jeering at him.One girl was making faces.

"To be sure," replied Orrin, gaily.

  • 朱鼎兆 08-11

"Well, that's as much as to say that I'm a sort of life pill."

"Look at that woman's dress over there," he said, again turningto Carrie, and nodding in a direction.

  • 赖明珠 08-11

"She's too gay," said Hurstwood, significantly. "No one can keepup with her pace unless they've got a lot of money."

{ There was, however, at this time, one theatre, the Chicago OperaHouse, which was considerably in the public eye, and its manager,David A. Henderson, had a fair local reputation. Carrie had seenone or two elaborate performances there and had heard of severalothers. She knew nothing of Henderson nor of the methods ofapplying, but she instinctively felt that this would be a likelyplace, and accordingly strolled about in that neighbourhood. Shecame bravely enough to the showy entrance way, with the polishedand begilded lobby, set with framed pictures out of the currentattraction, leading up to the quiet box-office, but she could getno further. A noted comic opera comedian was holding forth thatweek, and the air of distinction and prosperity overawed her.She could not imagine that there would be anything in such alofty sphere for her. She almost trembled at the audacity whichmight have carried her on to a terrible rebuff. She could findheart only to look at the pictures which were showy and then walkout. It seemed to her as if she had made a splendid escape andthat it would be foolhardy to think of applying in that quarteragain.

      "But she is your wife," she said, fixing her whole attention uponthe stilled actor, and softening the quality of her voice untilit was again low and musical. "Ray, my friend, courtship is thetext from which the whole sermon of married life takes its theme.Do not let yours be discontented and unhappy."}

      "Now, go on."

Hurstwood was looking into the paper. He could not see the lookof infinite weariness and discontent Carrie gave him.

       "Well, Mrs. Vance," said Carrie.

{ The next afternoon he was back again, seeking amusement andprofit. This time he followed up three of a kind to his doom. There was a better hand across the table, held by a pugnaciousIrish youth, who was a political hanger-on of the Tammanydistrict in which they were located. Hurstwood was surprised atthe persistence of this individual, whose bets came with a sang-froid which, if a bluff, was excellent art. Hurstwood began todoubt, but kept, or thought to keep, at least, the cool demeanourwith which, in olden times, he deceived those psychic students ofthe gaming table, who seem to read thoughts and moods, ratherthan exterior evidences, however subtle. He could not down thecowardly thought that this man had something better and wouldstay to the end, drawing his last dollar into the pot, should hechoose to go so far. Still, he hoped to win much--his hand wasexcellent. Why not raise it five more?

"What's the use of your standing there and talking like that, now?" he asked. "Do you think I've had it alone? You talk as ifI'd taken something."
