1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Well, it seems strange to see you way up here," said Mr. Kennygenially. "Stopping here?"
2. "Doesn't he?" said Carrie. "I won't do it any more after this."
3. He left the papers before going to the room, thinking thus tokeep them out of the hands of Carrie.
4. "Working," said Carrie.
5. "Well, it isn't as interesting," said Hurstwood.
6. "I call," he said.

1. Hurstwood only looked at her.
2. "If you do, maybe I can help you. I've got a lot of friends inthat line."
3. "The next time you get a pair of shoes, dearie," said Mrs. Vance,"get button, with thick soles and patent-leather tips. They'reall the rage this fall."
4. "Well, now, that's a blooming shame, isn't it? You don't lookvery well. I thought you looked a little pale. What have youbeen doing?"
5. "Stand back, now," they yelled. "Get out of this. What the helldo you mean? Out, now."
6. Drouet, for one, was lured as much by his longing for pleasure asby his desire to shine among his betters. The many friends he methere dropped in because they craved, without, perhaps, consciously analysing it, the company, the glow, the atmospherewhich they found. One might take it, after all, as an augur ofthe better social order, for the things which they satisfiedhere, though sensory, were not evil. No evil could come out ofthe contemplation of an expensively decorated chamber. The worsteffect of such a thing would be, perhaps, to stir up in thematerial-minded an ambition to arrange their lives upon asimilarly splendid basis. In the last analysis, that wouldscarcely be called the fault of the decorations, but rather ofthe innate trend of the mind. That such a scene might stir theless expensively dressed to emulate the more expensively dressedcould scarcely be laid at the door of anything save the falseambition of the minds of those so affected. Remove the elementso thoroughly and solely complained of--liquor--and there wouldnot be one to gainsay the qualities of beauty and enthusiasmwhich would remain. The pleased eye with which our modernrestaurants of fashion are looked upon is proof of thisassertion.

1. "Yes, I guess so," said his companion, looking up at him. Shewas thinking it was slightly strange.
2. "She said it was high time."
3. "Miss Madenda presents one of the most delightful bits ofcharacter work ever seen on the Casino stage," observed the stagecritic of the "Sun." "It is a bit of quiet, unassuming drollerywhich warms like good wine. Evidently the part was not intendedto take precedence, as Miss Madenda is not often on the stage, but the audience, with the characteristic perversity of suchbodies, selected for itself. The little Quakeress was marked fora favourite the moment she appeared, and thereafter easily heldattention and applause. The vagaries of fortune are indeedcurious."
4. Doing her simple part, Carrie gradually realised the meaning ofthe applause which was for her, and it was sweet. She feltmildly guilty of something--perhaps unworthiness. When herassociates addressed her in the wings she only smiled weakly. The pride and daring of place were not for her. It never oncecrossed her mind to be reserved or haughty--to be other than shehad been. After the performances she rode to her room with Lola,in a carriage provided.
5. He really strolled about, thinking, and then, the weather beingcold, stepped into a hotel. He knew hotels well enough to knowthat any decent individual was welcome to a chair in the lobby. This was in the Broadway Central, which was then one of the mostimportant hotels in the city. Taking a chair here was a painfulthing to him. To think he should come to this! He had heardloungers about hotels called chairwarmers. He had called themthat himself in his day. But here he was, despite thepossibility of meeting some one who knew him, shielding himselffrom cold and the weariness of the streets in a hotel lobby.
6. To another who inquired, "Is it something really good?" themanager replied:

1. She did manage to inquire at the box-office, however.
2. "Would you mind giving me ten cents?" he said, directly. "I'm ina position where I must ask some one."
3. Carrie laughed.
4、 "I've told you about this before, Maggie," said Mrs. Hurstwood."I'm not going to tell you again."
5、 At last the curtain was ready to go up. All the details of themake-up had been completed, and the company settled down as theleader of the small, hired orchestra tapped significantly uponhis music rack with his baton and began the soft curtain-raisingstrain. Hurstwood ceased talking, and went with Drouet and hisfriend Sagar Morrison around to the box.

{ On Monday she arose early and prepared to go to work. She dressedherself in a worn shirt-waist of dotted blue percale, a skirt oflight-brown serge rather faded, and a small straw hat which shehad worn all summer at Columbia City. Her shoes were old, andher necktie was in that crumpled, flattened state which time andmuch wearing impart. She made a very average looking shop-girlwith the exception of her features. These were slightly more eventhan common, and gave her a sweet, reserved, and pleasingappearance.
