1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "D'Artagnan, D'Artagnan!" cried Mme. Bonacieux, "where art thou? Donot leave me! You see I am dying!"
2. That evening D'Artagnan went to present his respects to M.Dessessart, and inform him of his promotion.
3. astonishment, the pretty Kitty defended herself resolutely.Time passes quickly when it is passed in attacks anddefenses. Midnight sounded, and almost at the same time thebell was rung in Milady's chamber.
4. "Listen, Milady," said the cardinal, "the affair isimportant. Sit down, and let us talk it over."
5. "I will do, without a promise and voluntarily, all that I can doto serve the king and be agreeable to the queen. Dispose of me,then, as a friend."
6. "What must be done?"

1. "They are firing at the corpses," replied Athos.
2. At length, M. de Treville himself returned. The injured man hadrecovered his senses. The surgeon declared that the situation ofthe Musketeer had nothing in it to render his friends uneasy, hisweakness having been purely and simply caused by loss of blood. Then M. de Treville made a sign with his hand, and all retiredexcept D'Artagnan, who did not forget that he had an audience, and with the tenacity of a Gascon remained in his place. When all had gone out and the door was closed, M. de Treville, onturning round, found himself alone with the young man. The eventwhich had occurred had in some degree broken the thread of hisideas. He inquired what was the will of his persevering visitor.D'Artagnan then repeated his name, and in an instant recoveringall his remembrances of the present and the past, M. de Trevillegrasped the situation.
3. "It appears to me," said D'Artagnan, with that prudencewhich allied itself in him so naturally with excessivebravery, "that we could have found some retired place on thedowns or the seashore."
4. Then D'Artagnan told M. de Treville a long history about thequeen. He expressed to him the fears he entertained with respectto her Majesty; he related to him what he had heard of theprojects of the cardinal with regard to Buckingham, and all witha tranquillity and candor of which M. de Treville was the morethe dupe, from having himself, as we have said, observedsomething fresh between the cardinal, the king, and the queen. As ten o'clock was striking, D'Artagnan left M. de Treville, whothanked him for his information, recommended him to have theservice of the king and queen always at heart, and returned tothe saloon; but at the foot of the stairs, D'Artagnan rememberedhe had forgotten his cane. He consequently sprang up again,re-entered the office, with a turn of his finger set the clockright again, that it might not be perceived the next day that ithad been put wrong, and certain from that time that he had awitness to prove his alibi, he ran downstairs and soon foundhimself in the street.
5. Milady folded her hands, and raising her fine eyes toward heaven,"Lord, Lord," said she, with an angelic meekness of gesture andtone, "pardon this man, as I myself pardon him."
6. "D'Artagnan, sire; he is the son of one of my oldest friends--theson of a man who served under the king your father, of gloriousmemory, in the civil war."

1. "It vexes me greatly," continued Athos, "that you attach so muchimportance to these animals, for I am not yet at the end of mystory."
2. D'Artagnan did reflect, and resolved to thrash Planchetprovisionally; which he did with the conscientiousness thatD'Artagnan carried into everything. After having well beatenhim, he forbade him to leave his service without his permission."For," added he, "the future cannot fail to mend; I inevitablylook for better times. Your fortune is therefore made if youremain with me, and I am too good a master to allow you to misssuch a chance by granting you the dismissal you require."This manner of acting roused much respect for D'Artagnan's policyamong the Musketeers. Planchet was equally seized withadmiration, and said no more about going away.
3. "Oh, when I said I was alone," said Milady, hoping to make the novicetalk by talking of herself, "it is not for want of friends in highplaces; but these friends themselves tremble before the cardinal. Thequeen herself does not dare to oppose the terrible minister. I haveproof that her Majesty, notwithstanding her excellent heart, has morethan once been obliged to abandon to the anger of his Eminence personswho had served her."
4. "They have abducted her? Ah!"
5. "Yes; but that menace terrifies me. I am not a fighting man atall, monsieur, and I am afraid of the Bastille."
6. D'Artagnan felt a strong inclination to embrace Planchet ashe had embraced him on his departure; but he feared lestthis mark of affection, bestowed upon his lackey in the openstreet, might appear extraordinary to passers-by, and herestrained himself.

1. "Ah, Madame," said D'Artagnan, entering by the door which theyoung woman opened for him, "allow me to tell you that you have abad sort of a husband."
2. "You have conspired with your wife, with Madame de Chevreuse, andwith my Lord Duke of Buckingham."
3. "Three hundred livres? Then put down three hundred livres,"said the procurator's wife, with a sigh.
4、 "Bah!" said D'Artagnan, "they will miss me; if they fire wewill ride after the carriage, and exterminate those who maybe in it. They must be enemies."
5、 Then he placed her in the boat, and as he was going to set foot in ithimself, Athos handed him a sum of silver.

Meantime, as we have said, despite the cries of hisconscience and the wise counsels of Athos, D'Artagnan becamehourly more in love with Milady. Thus he never failed topay his diurnal court to her; and the self-satisfied Gasconwas convinced that sooner or later she could not fail torespond.
