1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Say, Kitty," called one to a girl who was doing a waltz step ina few feet of space near one of the windows, "are you going tothe ball with me?"
2. Her voice became almost a sob.
3. "I'm all right," said Carrie, smiling.
4. "Good-bye!" he said finally, and went out.
5. "Why, there're lots of places," returned Lola, who was thinkingof her own lightsome tourneys with the gay youths. "You won't gowith anybody."
6. At one o'clock he thought of eating, and went to a restaurant inMadison Square. There he pondered over places which he mightlook up. He was tired. It was blowing up grey again. Acrossthe way, through Madison Square Park, stood the great hotels, looking down upon a busy scene. He decided to go over to thelobby of one and sit a while. It was warm in there and bright. He had seen no one he knew at the Broadway Central. In alllikelihood he would encounter no one here. Finding a seat on oneof the red plush divans close to the great windows which look outon Broadway's busy rout, he sat musing. His state did not seemso bad in here. Sitting still and looking out, he could takesome slight consolation in the few hundred dollars he had in hispurse. He could forget, in a measure, the weariness of thestreet and his tiresome searches. Still, it was only escape froma severe to a less severe state. He was still gloomy anddisheartened. There, minutes seemed to go very slowly. An hourwas a long, long time in passing. It was filled for him withobservations and mental comments concerning the actual guests ofthe hotel, who passed in and out, and those more prosperouspedestrians whose good fortune showed in their clothes andspirits as they passed along Broadway, outside. It was nearlythe first time since he had arrived in the city that his leisureafforded him ample opportunity to contemplate this spectacle. Now, being, perforce, idle himself, he wondered at the activityof others. How gay were the youths he saw, how pretty the women.Such fine clothes they all wore. They were so intent upongetting somewhere. He saw coquettish glances cast by magnificentgirls. Ah, the money it required to train with such--how well heknew! How long it had been since he had had the opportunity to doso!

1. "She ought to keep it for a time, anyhow," said Hanson. "Has shegone downstairs?"
2. "Yes, sir."

4. "I don't know," answered Carrie.
5. Cold as it was, these officers were hot and mad. Hurstwoodworked with the conductor, lifting stone after stone and warminghimself by the work.
6. "What a cursed thing that Mrs. Vance's call was, anyhow," hethought. "Stood right there, and looked me over. I know whatshe was thinking."

1. Drouet had gone, but what of it? He did not seem seriously angry. He only acted as if he were huffy. He would come back--of coursehe would. There was his cane in the corner. Here was one of hiscollars. He had left his light overcoat in the wardrobe. Shelooked about and tried to assure herself with the sight of adozen such details, but, alas, the secondary thought arrived.Supposing he did come back. Then what?
2. There was a time when he had been considerably enamoured of hisJessica, especially when he was younger and more confined in hissuccess. Now, however, in her seventeenth year, Jessica haddeveloped a certain amount of reserve and independence which wasnot inviting to the richest form of parental devotion. She was inthe high school, and had notions of life which were decidedlythose of a patrician. She liked nice clothes and urged for themconstantly. Thoughts of love and elegant individualestablishments were running in her head. She met girls at thehigh school whose parents were truly rich and whose fathers hadstanding locally as partners or owners of solid businesses. These girls gave themselves the airs befitting the thrivingdomestic establishments from whence they issued. They were theonly ones of the school about whom Jessica concerned herself.

6. At last the door opened and the motherly-looking sister appeared. She only looked an order. Slowly the line moved up and, one byone, passed in, until twenty-five were counted. Then sheinterposed a stout arm, and the line halted, with six men on thesteps. Of these the ex-manager was one. Waiting thus, sometalked, some ejaculated concerning the misery of it; somebrooded, as did Hurstwood. At last he was admitted, and, havingeaten, came away, almost angered because of his pains in gettingit.

She had seen comparatively little of the manager during thewinter, but had been kept constantly in mind of him by one thingand another, principally by the strong impression he had made. She was quite disturbed for the moment as to her appearance, butsoon satisfied herself by the aid of the mirror, and went below.
4、 "Well, when did you go on the stage, anyhow?" inquired Drouet.

In the light of the world's attitude toward woman and her duties, the nature of Carrie's mental state deserves consideration.Actions such as hers are measured by an arbitrary scale. Societypossesses a conventional standard whereby it judges all things. All men should be good, all women virtuous. Wherefore, villain, hast thou failed?

The part of Laura, as Carrie found out when she began to examineit, was one of suffering and tears. As delineated by Mr. Daly,it was true to the most sacred traditions of melodrama as hefound it when he began his career. The sorrowful demeanour, thetremolo music, the long, explanatory, cumulative addresses, allwere there.
