1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Pretty soon," said Drouet.
2. Carrie's new state was remarkable in that she saw possibilitiesin it. She was no sensualist, longing to drowse sleepily in thelap of luxury. She turned about, troubled by her daring, glad ofher release, wondering whether she would get something to do,wondering what Drouet would do. That worthy had his future fixedfor him beyond a peradventure. He could not help what he wasgoing to do. He could not see clearly enough to wish to dodifferently. He was drawn by his innate desire to act the oldpursuing part. He would need to delight himself with Carrie assurely as he would need to eat his heavy breakfast. He mightsuffer the least rudimentary twinge of conscience in whatever hedid, and in just so far he was evil and sinning. But whatevertwinges of conscience he might have would be rudimentary, you maybe sure.
3. "Stand back, now," they yelled. "Get out of this. What the helldo you mean? Out, now."
4. The words irritated Hurstwood greatly. Hot blood poured into hisbrain. Many thoughts formulated themselves. He was no thief. He didn't want the money. If he could only explain to Fitzgeraldand Moy, maybe it would be all right again.
5. "Well, you rest a little while I smoke," he said, rising, andthen he foolishly went to the forward platform of the car andleft the game as it stood.
6. "That's strange," thought Drouet. "She didn't say a word to me.I wonder where she went?"

1. While this was still in his mind, the incident with Oeslogge andCarrie occurred. There had been a good deal to irritate him, butthis seemed much the worst. Never before had she accused him ofstealing--or very near that. She doubted the naturalness of solarge a bill. And he had worked so hard to make expenses seemlight. He had been "doing" butcher and baker in order not tocall on her. He had eaten very little--almost nothing.
2. The fact that people took him to be better off than he was, hewell understood. It was so painfully clear to him that itretarded his search. Not that he wished to be less well-appearing, but that he was ashamed to belie his appearance byincongruous appeals. So he hesitated, wondering what to do.
3. "Don't!" said Carrie, drawing away, but not removing herhandkerchief from her eyes."Never mind about this quarrel now. Let it go. You stay hereuntil the month's out, anyhow, and then you can tell better whatyou want to do. Eh?"
4. "Oh, now, Miss Madenda," pleaded the youth.
5. "What a day to go over there," thought Carrie.
6. "Then I noticed that that was your natural look, and to-night Isaw it again. There's a shadow about your eyes, too, which givesyour face much this same character. It's in the depth of them, Ithink."

1. "Mr. Drouet is hurt and in the hospital. He wants to see you.The cab's downstairs."
2. "Why don't you come away?" he said, tenderly. "I will arrangefor you whatever--"
3. "Well, I'm going to be there several weeks. I'm going to studystock at our place and get new samples. I might show you'round."
4. Carrie soon found that while this drilling had some slightresemblance to the rehearsals as conducted at Avery Hall, theattitude of the manager was much more pronounced. She hadmarvelled at the insistence and superior airs of Mr. Millice, butthe individual conducting here had the same insistence, coupledwith almost brutal roughness. As the drilling proceeded, heseemed to wax exceedingly wroth over trifles, and to increase hislung power in proportion. It was very evident that he had agreat contempt for any assumption of dignity or innocence on thepart of these young women.
5. "How are you?" he said, extending his hand with an evidentmixture of feeling and a lack of plausible interest.
6. "Now," said a sharp, quick-mannered Jew, who was sitting at aroll-top desk near the window, "have you ever worked in any otherstore?"

1. To say truly, this would have been Carrie's attitude in any case. She had looked back at times upon her parting from Drouet and hadregretted that she had served him so badly. She hoped she wouldnever meet him again, but she was ashamed of her conduct. Notthat she had any choice in the final separation. She had gonewillingly to seek him, with sympathy in her heart, when Hurstwoodhad reported him ill. There was something cruel somewhere, andnot being able to track it mentally to its logical lair, sheconcluded with feeling that he would never understand whatHurstwood had done and would see hard-hearted decision in herdeed; hence her shame. Not that she cared for him. She did notwant to make any one who had been good to her feel badly.
2. The manager looked at his lovely prize, so beautiful, so winsome,so difficult to be won, and made strange resolutions. Hispassion had gotten to that stage now where it was no longercoloured with reason. He did not trouble over little barriers ofthis sort in the face of so much loveliness. He would accept thesituation with all its difficulties; he would not try to answerthe objections which cold truth thrust upon him. He wouldpromise anything, everything, and trust to fortune to disentanglehim. He would make a try for Paradise, whatever might be theresult. He would be happy, by the Lord, if it cost all honestyof statement, all abandonment of truth.
3. "Do you need any help?" she stammered.
4、 He looked at her forehead, which was moist from her brisk walk. Then he took out one of his own soft, scented silk handkerchiefsand touched her face here and there.
5、 "I am very glad to meet you," he said to Mrs. Vance when Carrieintroduced him, showing much of the old grace which hadcaptivated Carrie."Did you think your wife had run away?" said Mr. Vance, extendinghis hand upon introduction.

"Why don't we get married?" she inquired, thinking of the volublepromises he had made.

Carrie was an apt student of fortune's ways--of fortune'ssuperficialities. Seeing a thing, she would immediately set toinquiring how she would look, properly related to it. Be itknown that this is not fine feeling, it is not wisdom. Thegreatest minds are not so afflicted; and on the contrary, thelowest order of mind is not so disturbed. Fine clothes to herwere a vast persuasion; they spoke tenderly and Jesuitically forthemselves. When she came within earshot of their pleading, desire in her bent a willing ear. The voice of the so-calledinanimate! Who shall translate for us the language of thestones?

{ He looked rather determined now, in a desolate sort of way, andCarrie felt very sorry. Something of the old Hurstwood was here--the least shadow of what was once shrewd and pleasant strength.Outside, it was cloudy and blowing a few flakes of snow.

{ Her sister Minnie knew nothing of these rather wild cerebrations, though they exhausted the markets of delight. She was too busyscrubbing the kitchen woodwork and calculating the purchasingpower of eighty cents for Sunday's dinner. When Carrie hadreturned home, flushed with her first success and ready, for allher weariness, to discuss the now interesting events which led upto her achievement, the former had merely smiled approvingly andinquired whether she would have to spend any of it for car fare. This consideration had not entered in before, and it did not nowfor long affect the glow of Carrie's enthusiasm. Disposed as shethen was to calculate upon that vague basis which allows thesubtraction of one sum from another without any perceptiblediminution, she was happy.
