1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The two men were in the most harrowed state of affection. Theyscarcely heard the few remaining words with which the sceneconcluded. They only saw their idol, moving about with appealinggrace, continuing a power which to them was a revelation.
2. "George," said Mrs. Hurstwood, in that tone of voice which hadlong since come to be associated in his mind with demands, "wewant you to get us a season ticket to the races."
3. "She can't be long, now," he said to himself, half fearing toencounter her and equally depressed at the thought that she mighthave gone in by another way. His stomach was so empty that itached.
4. During the acts Carrie found herself listening to him veryattentively. He mentioned things in the play which she mostapproved of--things which swayed her deeply.
5. Hurstwood had returned, and was already in bed. His clothes werescattered loosely about. Carrie came to the door and saw him, then retreated. She did not want to go in yet a while. Shewanted to think. It was disagreeable to her.
6. "Oh, he's nice enough," answered Carrie; "but he isn't sincere. He assumes such an air."

1. "She's easier," thought Hurstwood to himself.
2. "Well, what are you stumbling around the right for? Want to breakup the line?"
3. For relief, he arose and joined in conversation with a fewfriends who were drinking. He tried to get the interest ofthings about him, but it was not to be. All the time histhoughts would run out to his home and see the scene beingtherein enacted. All the time he was wondering what she wouldsay when the boy handed her the envelope.
4. "I can't promise," she said, doubtfully.
5. "Oh, I don't care," said Carrie desperately. She was determinednow to have a try at the fascinating game.
6. This recovered her sufficiently and she went excitedly on, hardlybreathing until the shadow moved away from behind her. Then sheheaved a great breath.

1. "It don't matter how near you get to the front, so long as you'rein the first twenty-five," commented one of the first twenty-five. "You all go in together."
2. "I see," he said. "Do you live here in the city?"
3. "Why don't you do it then? Don't go shuffling along as if youwere dead. I've got to have people with life in them."
4. She bandied no more words with him, but hurried away, reachingher own door quite out of breath. There was something in theman's look which frightened her.
5. "I will," said Hurstwood.
6. "Yes."

1. This little experience nearly destroyed her ambition to call uponthe manager at the Chicago Opera House, but she decided to do soafter a time. He was of a more sedate turn of mind. He said atonce that there was no opening of any sort, and seemed toconsider her search foolish.
2. "Not yet," said Carrie.
3. His paper would then engross his thoughts.
4、 At her room, the wording of this missive occupied her for sometime, for she fell to the task at once. It was most difficult.
5、 He was so excited that he could not stay in the box. He wentinto the lobby, and then into the street, thinking. Drouet didnot return. In a few minutes the last act was over, and he wascrazy to have Carrie alone. He cursed the luck that could keephim smiling, bowing, shamming, when he wanted to tell her that heloved her, when he wanted to whisper to her alone. He groaned ashe saw that his hopes were futile. He must even take her tosupper, shamming. He finally went about and asked how she wasgetting along. The actors were all dressing, talking, hurryingabout. Drouet was palavering himself with the looseness ofexcitement and passion. The manager mastered himself only by agreat effort.

At this task she laboured incessantly for some time, findingrelief from her own nervous fears and imaginings in the humdrum, mechanical movement of the machine. She felt, as the minutespassed, that the room was not very light. It had a thick odourof fresh leather, but that did not worry her. She felt the eyesof the other help upon her, and troubled lest she was not workingfast enough.

Amid the tinsel and shine of her state walked Carrie, unhappy. As when Drouet took her, she had thought: "Now I am lifted intothat which is best"; as when Hurstwood seemingly offered her thebetter way: "Now am I happy." But since the world goes its waypast all who will not partake of its folly, she now found herselfalone. Her purse was open to him whose need was greatest. Inher walks on Broadway, she no longer thought of the elegance ofthe creatures who passed her. Had they more of that peace andbeauty which glimmered afar off, then were they to be envied.
