1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 It was noon before he finally abandoned his papers and got underway. Owing to the slightly warmer temperature the streets werebad. He went across Fourteenth Street on the car and got atransfer south on Broadway. One little advertisement he had, relating to a saloon down in Pearl Street. When he reached theBroadway Central, however, he changed his mind.
2. He saw he was the master of the situation--he felt it. Hereached over and touched her hand.
3. "Why, Mrs. Wheeler," said Mrs. Vance, looking Carrie over in aglance, "where have you been? Why haven't you been to see me?I've been wondering all this time what had become of you.Really, I----"
4. "We can get along if we economise. I'll pay you back all right."
5. She shook it off and ate. She forgot, in part, and was merry. When it came to the after-theatre proposition, however, she shookher head.
6. He dropped the note and looked quietly round. Now he knew whathe missed. It was the little ornamental clock, which was hers.It had gone from the mantelpiece. He went into the front room, his bedroom, the parlour, lighting the gas as he went. From thechiffonier had gone the knick-knacks of silver and plate. Fromthe table-top, the lace coverings. He opened the wardrobe--noclothes of hers. He opened the drawers--nothing of hers. Hertrunk was gone from its accustomed place. Back in his own roomhung his old clothes, just as he had left them. Nothing else wasgone.

1. "All right," she replied, but he could see that she was thinkingthat it was a curious thing. Before he went she asked him a fewmore questions, and that irritated him. He began to feel thatshe was a disagreeable attachment.
2. "Only fifty dollars."
3. "Nothing," said Carrie, weakly.
4. Knowing that the end was so near, she became rather solicitous.
5. "I'm sorry you couldn't get home," she said kindly. "I wasfixing to have such a nice dinner."
6. "I've got to get up early in the morning, so I'll go to bed," andoff he went, disappearing into the dark little bedroom off thehall, for the night.

1. "It's not very hard to get work now," put in Hanson, "if you lookright."
2. The nature of these vast retail combinations, should they everpermanently disappear, will form an interesting chapter in thecommercial history of our nation. Such a flowering out of amodest trade principle the world had never witnessed up to thattime. They were along the line of the most effective retailorganisation, with hundreds of stores coordinated into one andlaid out upon the most imposing and economic basis. They werehandsome, bustling, successful affairs, with a host of clerks anda swarm of patrons. Carrie passed along the busy aisles, muchaffected by the remarkable displays of trinkets, dress goods, stationery, and jewelry. Each separate counter was a show placeof dazzling interest and attraction. She could not help feelingthe claim of each trinket and valuable upon her personally, andyet she did not stop. There was nothing there which she couldnot have used--nothing which she did not long to own. The daintyslippers and stockings, the delicately frilled skirts andpetticoats, the laces, ribbons, hair-combs, purses, all touchedher with individual desire, and she felt keenly the fact that notany of these things were in the range of her purchase. She was awork-seeker, an outcast without employment, one whom the averageemployee could tell at a glance was poor and in need of asituation.
3. "Oh," she said at last, "you mustn't look at me like that."
4. "What are you going to do?" he said.
5. "Not yet," said Carrie.
6. The following morning the train pulled safely into Montreal andthey stepped down, Hurstwood glad to be out of danger, Carriewondering at the novel atmosphere of the northern city. Longbefore, Hurstwood had been here, and now he remembered the nameof the hotel at which he had stopped. As they came out of themain entrance of the depot he heard it called anew by a busman.

1. The latter laughed gleefully as she saw the hand coming her way.It was as if she were invincible when Hurstwood helped her.
2. Carrie took the instructions affably. She saw what Drouet liked;in a vague way she saw where he was weak. It lessens a woman'sopinion of a man when she learns that his admiration is sopointedly and generously distributed. She sees but one object ofsupreme compliment in this world, and that is herself. If a manis to succeed with many women, he must be all in all to each.
3. "Have you done anything about your dress?"
4、 "Better, I should say so. What comes next?"
5、 "You foolish girl."

Carrie gazed without exactly getting the import of what he meant.

"We'll have an argument, maybe," said the other.

For another thing, Hurstwood was exceedingly interesting in hisaffection for her. Troubled as he was, he never exposed hisdifficulties to her. He carried himself with the same self-important air, took his new state with easy familiarity, andrejoiced in Carrie's proclivities and successes. Each evening hearrived promptly to dinner, and found the little dining-room amost inviting spectacle. In a way, the smallness of the roomadded to its luxury. It looked full and replete. The white-covered table was arrayed with pretty dishes and lighted with afour-armed candelabra, each light of which was topped with a redshade. Between Carrie and the girl the steaks and chops came outall right, and canned goods did the rest for a while. Carriestudied the art of making biscuit, and soon reached the stagewhere she could show a plate of light, palatable morsels for herlabour.

{ "Why, there're lots of places," returned Lola, who was thinkingof her own lightsome tourneys with the gay youths. "You won't gowith anybody."

      Oh, the tangle of human life! How dimly as yet we see. Here wasCarrie, in the beginning poor, unsophisticated. emotional;responding with desire to everything most lovely in life, yetfinding herself turned as by a wall. Laws to say: "Be allured,if you will, by everything lovely, but draw not nigh unless byrighteousness." Convention to say: "You shall not better yoursituation save by honest labour." If honest labour beunremunerative and difficult to endure; if it be the long, longroad which never reaches beauty, but wearies the feet and theheart; if the drag to follow beauty be such that one abandons theadmired way, taking rather the despised path leading to herdreams quickly, who shall cast the first stone? Not evil, butlonging for that which is better, more often directs the steps ofthe erring. Not evil, but goodness more often allures thefeeling mind unused to reason.}

He wondered now why he had not asked whether this train went onthrough to Montreal or some Canadian point. Perhaps he couldhave saved time. He jumped up and sought the conductor.

He looked rather foolish at this answer, and then attempted tocorrect himself so as not to appear a dupe.
