1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Now a sharper lash of wind cut down and they huddled closer. Itwas an edging, shifting, pushing throng. There was no anger, nopleading, no threatening words. It was all sullen endurance, unlightened by either wit or good fellowship.
2. "Had your breakfast yet?" inquired that worthy.
3. "Good-morning, sir," said the latter, thinking at first that hewas encountering one of his out-of-town customers.
4. "We might try it," he suggested. "I've been thinking that ifwe'd take a smaller flat down town and live economically for ayear, I would have enough, with what I have invested, to open agood place. Then we could arrange to live as you want to."
5. "Where did you go this morning?" he finally asked weakly.
6. "Oh!" said Carrie, in a burst of anguish. So distant anddefinite a point seemed to increase the difficulty.

1. Going to Miss Osborne's that afternoon, she found that littlelady packing and singing.
2. "He ain't so cold."
3. But she was alone. That was the greater thought just at present. How about that? Would she go out to work again? Would she beginto look around in the business district? The stage! Oh, yes.Drouet had spoken about that. Was there any hope there? Shemoved to and fro, in deep and varied thoughts, while the minutesslipped away and night fell completely. She had had nothing toeat, and yet there she sat, thinking it over.
4. He had fixed upon that region as an objective point.
5. "I will," said Hurstwood, moving away. The whole conversationwas a trial to him. It seemed to add complications with veryword. This man called up a thousand memories. He representedeverything he had left. Chicago, his wife, the elegant resort--all these were in his greeting and inquiries. And here he was inthis same hotel expecting to confer with him, unquestionablywaiting to have a good time with him. All at once the Chicagopapers would arrive. The local papers would have accounts inthem this very day. He forgot his triumph with Carrie in thepossibility of soon being known for what he was, in this man'seyes, a safe-breaker. He could have groaned as he went into thebarber shop. He decided to escape and seek a more secludedhotel.
6. There was no answer ready for this. He had got used to thesuggestion.

1. The man gave him a last push and closed the door. As he did so,Hurstwood slipped and fell in the snow. It hurt him, and somevague sense of shame returned. He began to cry and swearfoolishly.
2. "Left me!" he muttered, and repeated, "left me!"
3. He saw some energetic charging by the police and arrests beingmade.
4. "That isn't a good house," said Drouet. "You don't want to workat anything like that, anyhow."
5. As the curtain for the next act arose, Drouet came back. He wasvery much enlivened in temper and inclined to whisper, butHurstwood pretended interest. He fixed his eyes on the stage, although Carrie was not there, a short bit of melodramatic comedypreceding her entrance. He did not see what was going on,however. He was thinking his own thoughts, and they werewretched.
6. "Not a thing."

1. He wondered now why he had not asked whether this train went onthrough to Montreal or some Canadian point. Perhaps he couldhave saved time. He jumped up and sought the conductor.
2. During the last three months of the Warren Street connection,Hurstwood took parts of days off and hunted, tracking thebusiness advertisements. It was a more or less depressingbusiness, wholly because of the thought that he must soon getsomething or he would begin to live on the few hundred dollars hewas saving, and then he would have nothing to invest--he wouldhave to hire out as a clerk.
3. "Let's go to the matinee this afternoon," said Mrs. Vance, whohad stepped across into Carrie's flat one morning, still arrayedin a soft pink dressing-gown, which she had donned upon rising.Hurstwood and Vance had gone their separate ways nearly an hourbefore.
5、 "It's in your eyes and mouth," he went on abstractedly. "Iremember thinking, the first time I saw you, that there wassomething peculiar about your mouth. I thought you were about tocry."

"You think," he said, "I am happy; that I ought not to complain? If you were to meet all day with people who care absolutelynothing about you, if you went day after day to a place wherethere was nothing but show and indifference, if there was not oneperson in all those you knew to whom you could appeal forsympathy or talk to with pleasure, perhaps you would be unhappytoo.

And yet she was not without thoughts which were disturbing. Whatdid he know? What had Drouet told him? Was she a wife in hiseyes, or what? Would he marry her? Even while he talked, and shesoftened, and her eyes were lighted with a tender glow, she wasasking herself if Drouet had told him they were not married. There was never anything at all convincing about what Drouetsaid.

{ "You are," stamped Carrie. "You're a horrid, conceited coward, that's what you are. If you had any sense of manhood in you, youwouldn't have thought of doing any such thing."

There it ran winding before his gaze, shining brightly in theclear light, between the undulating banks on the right and thetall, tree-covered heights on the left. The spring-likeatmosphere woke him to a sense of its loveliness, and for a fewmoments he stood looking at it, folding his hands behind hisback. Then he turned and followed it toward the east side, idlyseeking the ships he had seen. It was four o'clock before thewaning day, with its suggestion of a cooler evening, caused himto return. He was hungry and would enjoy eating in the warmroom.

{ She did not hear this very well. Her heart was troubled by akind of terror. The fact that she was alone, away from home, rushing into a great sea of life and endeavour, began to tell. She could not help but feel a little choked for breath--a littlesick as her heart beat so fast. She half closed her eyes andtried to think it was nothing, that Columbia City was only alittle way off.

"Listen, pardner," said the leader, ignoring the policeman andaddressing Hurstwood. "We're all working men, like yourself. Ifyou were a regular motorman, and had been treated as we've been, you wouldn't want any one to come in and take your place, wouldyou? You wouldn't want any one to do you out of your chance toget your rights, would you?"
