1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Oh, go on. What have you got to be afraid of? It's a cheapcompany. The rest of them aren't as good as you are."
2. Chapter XXXVII
3. "I'm not going out on the road," said Miss Osborne.
4. "You know it, don't you?" he would continue.
5. "Well, then, what makes you look so?"
6. Carrie looked at him tenderly. She could have laid her head uponhis shoulder, so delightful did it all seem."Well," she said, "I'll try and get ready then."

1. Now a critic called to get up one of those tinsel interviewswhich shine with clever observations, show up the wit of critics, display the folly of celebrities, and divert the public. Heliked Carrie, and said so, publicly--adding, however, that shewas merely pretty, good-natured, and lucky. This cut like aknife. The "Herald," getting up an entertainment for the benefitof its free ice fund, did her the honour to beg her to appearalong with celebrities for nothing. She was visited by a youngauthor, who had a play which he thought she could produce. Alas, she could not judge. It hurt her to think it. Then she foundshe must put her money in the bank for safety, and so moving, finally reached the place where it struck her that the door tolife's perfect enjoyment was not open.
2. Carrie merely hastened her steps and took the Sixth Avenue car.Her head was so full of the wonder of it that she had time fornothing else.
3. There was another silence, in which the car ran smoothly along. There were not so many houses along this part of the way.Hurstwood did not see many people either. The situation was notwholly disagreeable to him. If he were not so cold, he thoughthe would do well enough.
4. He began to wish that he had compromised in some way or other--that he had sent the money. Perhaps he could do it up here. Hewould go in and see, anyhow. He would have no row. By the timehe reached his own street he was keenly alive to the difficultiesof his situation and wished over and over that some solutionwould offer itself, that he could see his way out. He alightedand went up the steps to the front door, but it was with anervous palpitation of the heart. He pulled out his key andtried to insert it, but another key was on the inside. He shookat the knob, but the door was locked. Then he rang the bell. Noanswer. He rang again--this time harder. Still no answer. Hejangled it fiercely several times in succession, but withoutavail. Then he went below.
5. "Oh, let up," he answered.
6. They did so. The fixtures had already been sold and the sumdivided.

1. "It is, eh?" exclaimed the big comedian. "She killed my hand allright. I'm not going to stand that."
2. "And you don't want to go again to night?"
3. "Oh, no," he said; "I'm stopping right around here in Thirty-third Street."
4. Nothing came of this until after the Brooklyn adventure ofHurstwood's and her success with the speaking part. Then shebegan to feel as if she must be free. She thought of leavingHurstwood and thus making him act for himself, but he haddeveloped such peculiar traits she feared he might resist anyeffort to throw him off. He might hunt her out at the show andhound her in that way. She did not wholly believe that he would, but he might. This, she knew, would be an embarrassing thing ifhe made himself conspicuous in any way. It troubled her greatly.
5. "You have, eh?" she answered. "You've deceived me--that's whatyou've done. You've brought your old friends out here underfalse pretences. You've made me out to be--Oh," and with thisher voice broke and she pressed her two little hands togethertragically.
6. His first application was in sunny Second Avenue. A well-dressedman came leisurely strolling toward him out of Stuyvesant Park.Hurstwood nerved himself and sidled near.

1. "Did you have any idea what sort of part you would like to get?"asked the manager softly.
2. Hurstwood was a man of authority and some fine feeling, and itirritated him excessively to find himself surrounded more andmore by a world upon which he had no hold, and of which he had alessening understanding.
3. "Cue," said the prompter, close to her side, but she did nothear. Already she was moving forward with a steady grace, bornof inspiration. She dawned upon the audience, handsome andproud, shifting, with the necessity of the situation, to a cold, white, helpless object, as the social pack moved away from herscornfully.
4、 "How much did it cost him?" asked his mother.
5、 Mrs. Morgan saw the drift of things and gleamed at Carrie withenvious and snapping black eyes.

In standing about the stage, marching, and occasionally liftingup her voice in the general chorus, she had a chance to observethe audience and to see the inauguration of a great hit. He dropped the note and looked quietly round. Now he knew whathe missed. It was the little ornamental clock, which was hers.It had gone from the mantelpiece. He went into the front room, his bedroom, the parlour, lighting the gas as he went. From thechiffonier had gone the knick-knacks of silver and plate. Fromthe table-top, the lace coverings. He opened the wardrobe--noclothes of hers. He opened the drawers--nothing of hers. Hertrunk was gone from its accustomed place. Back in his own roomhung his old clothes, just as he had left them. Nothing else wasgone.
