1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "You seem to have taken the town by storm," he wrote. "This isdelightful. I am as glad for your sake as for my own."
2. "That's all right," said Drouet, feeling her thought. "He doesn'tknow anything. You're Mrs. Drouet now."
3. "I'll see if there is a dining-car," he added. "I'm hungry."
4. As yet, Hurstwood had only a thought of pleasure withoutresponsibility. He did not feel that he was doing anything tocomplicate his life. His position was secure, his home-life, ifnot satisfactory, was at least undisturbed, his personal libertyrather untrammelled. Carrie's love represented only so muchadded pleasure. He would enjoy this new gift over and above hisordinary allowance of pleasure. He would be happy with her andhis own affairs would go on as they had, undisturbed.
5. Hurstwood saw the difficulty of this thing, and yet it did notseem so terrible. Carrie was tired and dispirited, but now shecould rest. Viewing the world from his rocking-chair, itsbitterness did not seem to approach so rapidly. To-morrow wasanother day.
6. "What are your rates?" she inquired.

1. To those who have never wavered in conscience, the predicament ofthe individual whose mind is less strongly constituted and whotrembles in the balance between duty and desire is scarcelyappreciable, unless graphically portrayed. Those who have neverheard that solemn voice of the ghostly clock which ticks withawful distinctness, "thou shalt," "thou shalt not," "thou shalt,""thou shalt not," are in no position to judge. Not alone insensitive, highly organised natures is such a mental conflictpossible. The dullest specimen of humanity, when drawn by desiretoward evil, is recalled by a sense of right, which isproportionate in power and strength to his evil tendency. Wemust remember that it may not be a knowledge of right, for noknowledge of right is predicated of the animal's instinctiverecoil at evil. Men are still led by instinct before they areregulated by knowledge. It is instinct which recalls thecriminal--it is instinct (where highly organised reasoning isabsent) which gives the criminal his feeling of danger, his fearof wrong.
2. Minnie was thinking of the resource which Carrie's board wouldadd. It would pay the rent and would make the subject ofexpenditure a little less difficult to talk about with herhusband. But if Carrie was going to think of running around inthe beginning there would be a hitch somewhere. Unless Carriesubmitted to a solemn round of industry and saw the need of hardwork without longing for play, how was her coming to the city toprofit them? These thoughts were not those of a cold, hardnature at all. They were the serious reflections of a mind whichinvariably adjusted itself, without much complaining, to suchsurroundings as its industry could make for it.
3. Chapter VIII
4. "He's the man that runs the Grand Pacific in Chicago."
5. Drouet noticed this. He saw the new bow in her hair and the newway of arranging her locks which she affected one morning.
6. Hurstwood ran the car close and stopped. He had not done sowholly, however, before a crowd gathered about. It was composedof ex-motormen and conductors in part, with a sprinkling offriends and sympathisers.

1. He only offered a third interest in the stock, fixtures, andgood-will, and this in return for a thousand dollars andmanagerial ability on the part of the one who should come in.There was no property involved, because the owner of the saloonmerely rented from an estate.
2. Wholly depressed, he started for Thirteenth Street. The flat hadonly a light in the kitchen, where Carrie was working. He strucka match and, lighting the gas, sat down in the dining-roomwithout even greeting her. She came to the door and looked in.
3. "Stand over there," he said.
4. He wondered now why he had not asked whether this train went onthrough to Montreal or some Canadian point. Perhaps he couldhave saved time. He jumped up and sought the conductor.
5. "Damn it all!" he said. "I can get something. I'm not downyet."
6. Carrie picked out the new abode because of its newness and brightwood-work. It was one of the very new ones supplied with steamheat, which was a great advantage. The stationary range, hot andcold water, dumb-waiter, speaking tubes, and call-bell for thejanitor pleased her very much. She had enough of the instinctsof a housewife to take great satisfaction in these things.

1. "Lord!" he said, in his own thoughts, "this can't go on."
2. The offer was genuine enough, but it was a question withHurstwood whether a third interest in that locality could be madeto yield one hundred and fifty dollars a month, which he figuredhe must have in order to meet the ordinary family expenses and becomfortable. It was not the time, however, after many failuresto find what he wanted, to hesitate. It looked as though a thirdwould pay a hundred a month now. By judicious management andimprovement, it might be made to pay more. Accordingly he agreedto enter into partnership, and made over his thousand dollars, preparing to enter the next day.
3. Carrie saw a light.
4、 "I don't want to go with these people who write to me. I knowwhat kind they are."
5、 "Come on," he said, "I'll see you through all right. Get yourselfsome clothes."

In the interval which marked the preparation of the meal Carriefound time to study the flat. She had some slight gift ofobservation and that sense, so rich in every woman--intuition.

The immediate result of this was nothing. Results from suchthings are usually long in growing. Morning brings a change offeeling. The existent condition invariably pleads for itself. It is only at odd moments that we get glimpses of the misery ofthings. The heart understands when it is confronted withcontrasts. Take them away and the ache subsides.

Carrie looked, and observed the grace commended.

Drouet, all the time, was conducting himself in a model way forone of his sort. He took her about a great deal, spent moneyupon her, and when he travelled took her with him. There weretimes when she would be alone for two or three days, while hemade the shorter circuits of his business, but, as a rule, shesaw a great deal of him.

{ Carrie heard all this in a very ruffled state. It soundedsincere enough, however, despite all he had done. There was atenseness in Hurstwood's voice and manner which could but havesome effect. She did not want anything to do with him. He wasmarried, he had deceived her once, and now again, and she thoughthim terrible. Still there is something in such daring and powerwhich is fascinating to a woman, especially if she can be made tofeel that it is all prompted by love of her.

      Here, then, was Carrie, established in a pleasant fashion, freeof certain difficulties which most ominously confronted her,laden with many new ones which were of a mental order, andaltogether so turned about in all of her earthly relationshipsthat she might well have been a new and different individual.She looked into her glass and saw a prettier Carrie than she hadseen before; she looked into her mind, a mirror prepared of herown and the world's opinions, and saw a worse. Between these twoimages she wavered, hesitating which to believe.}
