1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 He handed the letter across. It was headed with the address quoted.DEAR MR. HOLMES [it said]:
2. "You are mad!" he cried. "You are talking insanely. I helped herto escape? Where is she now?"
3. -THE END-
4. "`It would be injustice to hesitate,' said he. `You will, however, I am sure, excuse me for taking an obvious precaution.'With that he seized my hair in both his hands, and tugged until Iyelled with the pain. `There is water in your eyes,' said he ashe released me. `I perceive that all is as it should be. But wehave to be careful, for we have twice been deceived by wigs andonce by paint. I could tell you tales of cobbler's wax whichwould disgust you with human nature.' He stepped over to thewindow and shouted through it at the top of his voice that thevacancy was filled. A groan of disappointment came up from below, and the folk all trooped away in different directions until therewas not a red-head to be seen except my own and that of themanager.
5. "That won't help us much. We've got to make up our minds what todo."
6. "Certainly, that is always my custom."

1. Mr. Garrideb surveyed me with not too friendly a gaze.
2. "Of course the calculation now was a simple one. If a rod of sixfeet threw a shadow of nine, a tree of sixty-four feet would throw oneof ninety-six, and the line of the one would of course be the lineof the other. I measured out the distance, which brought me almostto the wall of the house, and I thrust a peg into the spot. You canimagine my exultation, Watson, when within two inches of my peg Isaw a conical depression in the ground. I knew that it was the markmade by Brunton in his measurements, and that I was still upon histrail.
3. "Because Inspector Martin from Norwich has just passed through. But maybe you are the surgeons. She's not dead- or wasn't by lastaccounts. You may be in time to save her yet- though it be for thegallows."
4. "Well, when he saw that they were indeed the proofs, it was thenthat he yielded to temptation. He put his shoes on the table. What wasit you put on that chair near the window?"
5. "'What do you want with me?' I asked.
6. "Absolute exhaustion- possibly mere hunger and fatigue," said I,with my finger on the thready pulse, where the stream of life trickledthin and small.

1. Ronald Adair was fond of cards- playing continually, but never forsuch stakes as would hurt him. He was a member of the Baldwin, theCavendish, and the Bagatelle card clubs. It was shown that, afterdinner on the day of his death, he had played a rubber of whist at thelatter club. He had also played there in the afternoon. The evidenceof those who had played with him- Mr. Murray, Sir John Hardy, andColonel Moran- showed that the game was whist, and that there was afairly equal fall of the cards. Adair might have lost five pounds, butnot more. His fortune was a considerable one, and such a loss couldnot in any way affect him. He had played nearly every day at oneclub or other, but he was a cautious player, and usually rose awinner. It came out in evidence that, in partnership with ColonelMoran, he had actually won as much as four hundred and twenty poundsin a sitting, some weeks before, from Godfrey Milner and LordBalmoral. So much for his recent history as it came out at theinquest.
2. Our proceedings of that first morning did little to advance theinvestigation. It was marked, however, at the outset by an incidentwhich left the most sinister impression upon my mind. The approachto the spot at which the tragedy occurred is down a narrow, winding, country lane, While we made our way along it we heard the rattle ofa carriage coming towards us and stood aside to let it pass. As itdrove by us I caught a glimpse through the closed window of a horriblycontorted, grinning face glaring out at us. Those staring eyes andgnashing teeth flashed past us like a dreadful vision.
3. "'You have been in New Zealand.'
4. Now for the point which I will make more plain when we meet. Indeed, this note is merely to give you a general idea of the situation and toascertain whether you would care to interest yourself in the matter. The lady began to show some curious traits quite alien to herordinarily sweet and gentle disposition. The gentleman had beenmarried twice and he had one son by the first wife. This boy was nowfifteen, a very charming and affectionate youth, though unhappilyinjured through an accident in childhood. Twice the wife was caught inthe act of assaulting this poor lad in the most unprovoked way. Onceshe struck him with a stick and left a great weal on his arm. This was a small matter, however, compared with her conduct to herown child, a dear boy just under one year of age. On one occasionabout a month ago this child had been left by its nurse for a fewminutes. A loud cry from the baby, as of pain, called the nurseback. As she ran into the room she saw her employer, the lady, leaningover the baby and apparently biting his neck. There was a smallwound in the neck from which a stream of blood had escaped. Thenurse was so horrified that she wished to call the husband, but thelady implored her not to do so and actually gave her five pounds asa price for her silence. No explanation was ever given, and for themoment the matter was passed over.
5. "You want me to see him?"
6. "These last words were in Greek, and at the same instant the manwith a convulsive effort tore the plaster from his lips, and screamingout 'Sophy! Sophy!' rushed into the woman's arms. Their embrace wasbut for an instant, however, for the younger man seized the womanand pushed her out of the room, while the elder easily overpowered hisemaciated victim and dragged him away through the other door. For amoment I was left alone in the room, and I sprang to my feet with somevague idea that I might in some way get a clue to what this housewas in which I found myself. Fortunately, however, I took no steps, for looking up I saw that the older man was standing in the doorway, with his eyes fixed upon me.

1. "Only about a mile, sir."
2. The official police don't need you, Mr. Holmes, to tell them thatthe carpet must have been turned round. That's clear enough, for thestains lie above each other- if you lay it over this way. But what Iwant to know is, who shifted the carpet, and why?"
3. "Yes, and a most remarkable bird it proved. I don't wonderthat you should take an interest in it. It laid an egg after itwas dead--the bonniest, brightest little blue egg that ever wasseen. I have it here in my museum."
4、 "Had he ever one from France?"
5、 "Mrs. St. Clair had fainted at the sight of the blood upon thewindow, and she was escorted home in a cab by the police, as herpresence could be of no help to them in their investigations.Inspector Barton, who had charge of the case, made a very carefulexamination of the premises, but without finding anything whichthrew any light upon the matter. One mistake had been made in notarresting Boone instantly, as he was allowed some few minutes duringwhich he might have communicated with his friend the lascar, butthis fault was soon remedied, and he was seized and searched, without anything being found which could incriminate him. Therewere, it is true, some blood-stains upon his right shirt-sleeve, buthe pointed to his ring-finger, which had been cut near the nail, andexplained that the bleeding came from there, adding that he had beento the window not long before, and that the stains which had beenobserved there came doubtless from the same source. He deniedstrenuously having ever seen Mr. Neville St. Clair and swore thatthe presence of the clothes in his room was as much a mystery to himas to the police. As to Mrs. St. Clair's assertion that she hadactually seen her husband at the window, he declared that she musthave been either mad or dreaming. He was removed, loudly protesting,to the police-station, while the inspector remained upon thepremises in the hope that the ebbing tide might afford some freshclue.

He opened the lid and took out a small object most carefully wrappedin some fine Eastern silk. This he unfolded, and disclosed adelicate little saucer of the most beautiful deep-blue colour."It needs careful handling, Watson. This is the real egg-shellpottery of the Ming dynasty. No finer piece ever passed throughChristie's. A complete set of this would be worth a king's ransom-in fact, it is doubtful if there is a complete set outside theimperial palace of Peking. The sight of this would drive a realconnoisseur wild."

"You will excuse a certain abstraction of mind, my dear Watson,"said he. "Some curious facts have been submitted to me within the lasttwenty-four hours, and they in turn have given rise to somespeculations of a more general character. I have serious thoughts ofwriting a small monograph upon the uses of dogs in the work of thedetective."
