1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Don't think of going, Carrie," he said. "If you ever cared forme at all, come along and let's start right. I'll do whateveryou say. I'll marry you, or I'll let you go back. Give yourselftime to think it over. I wouldn't have wanted you to come if Ihadn't loved you. I tell you, Carrie, before God, I can't livewithout you. I won't!"
2. "Well, you'll have to call at his office."
3. Hurstwood was an interesting character after his kind. He wasshrewd and clever in many little things, and capable of creatinga good impression. His managerial position was fairly important--a kind of stewardship which was imposing, but lacked financialcontrol. He had risen by perseverance and industry, through longyears of service, from the position of barkeeper in a commonplacesaloon to his present altitude. He had a little office in theplace, set off in polished cherry and grill-work, where he kept,in a roll-top desk, the rather simple accounts of the place--supplies ordered and needed. The chief executive and financialfunctions devolved upon the owners--Messrs. Fitzgerald and Moy--and upon a cashier who looked after the money taken in.
4. "You know," he said, "I think I'm going to get the worst of mydeal down there."
5. Hurstwood read this, formulating to himself his own idea of whatwould be the outcome. He was a great believer in the strength ofcorporations.
6. "Don't kick, old man," remarked the manager. "If it don't go thefirst week we will cut it out."

1. "Ever had any experience?" he asked again, almost severely.
2. After eating, he stood about as before, waiting until his turncame.
3. "Is Mr. Drouet in?" said Hurstwood blandly.
4. "I couldn't get home," he said, when he came in later in theevening, "I was so busy."
5. "Oh, come," he said, "you've been thinking it over too long.I'll tell you what you do. You say you can't wear them outthere. Why don't you rent a furnished room and leave them inthat for a week?"
6. "Hurstwood!" exclaimed Carrie, rising. Her face had changedseveral shades since this announcement was made. She lookedwithin and without herself in a half-dazed way.

1. "Fine," he said, and then, seized by a sudden impulse, arose andwent about to the stage door.
2. The girl really had no idea where she had gone, but not likingHurstwood, and wishing to cause him trouble, answered: "Yes,Hooley's."
3. The ex-manager laid hand to the lever and pushed it gently, as hethought. It worked much easier than he imagined, however, withthe result that the car jerked quickly forward, throwing him backagainst the door. He straightened up sheepishly, while theinstructor stopped the car with the brake.
4. "Nobody knows us down there," said one, a gentleman whose facewas a slight improvement over gross ignorance and sensuality. Healways wore a silk hat of most imposing proportions. "We canhave a good time." His left eye moved with just the semblance ofa wink. "You want to come along, George."
5. It grated upon him to see the feeling his daughter displayed.
6. Not long after she arrived Mrs. Hale established social relationswith her, and together they went about. For a long time this washer only companionship, and the gossip of the manager's wifeformed the medium through which she saw the world. Suchtrivialities, such praises of wealth, such conventionalexpression of morals as sifted through this passive creature'smind, fell upon Carrie and for the while confused her.

1. "Well, I won't," said the little girl, who had a resource in heradmirers. "I went once and I didn't have anything at the end ofthe season."
2. "Oh a million or more," said Hurstwood.
3. He looked so disconsolate that it scared her. She began to seethat she herself had been drifting. She had felt it all thetime.
4、 Hurstwood climbed up on the platform in the gloomy barn andwaited for a signal. He was nervous, and yet the thing was arelief. Anything was better than the barn.
5、 "Get out," said the drummer, lightly. "He hasn't called morethan half a dozen times since we've been here."

It was a portion of the stock room which gave no idea of thegeneral character of the place, and Carrie could form no opinionof the nature of the work.

"Very well," said Carrie, who was so disturbed that she could notbring a proper attitude to bear in the matter. She was stillnervous to reach Drouet and see what could be the matter.Hurstwood contemplated her and felt this. He was not disturbedthat it should be so. He did not trouble because she was movedsympathetically in the matter. It was one of the qualities inher which pleased him exceedingly. He was only thinking how heshould explain. Even this was not the most serious thing in hismind, however. His own deed and present flight were the greatshadows which weighed upon him.
