1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "It is fear, Mr. Holmes. It is terror." She raised her veil as shespoke, and we could see that she was indeed in a pitiable state ofagitation, her face all drawn and gray, with restless, frightenedeyes, like those of some hunted animal. Her features and figure werethose of a woman of thirty, but her hair was shot with premature gray, and her expression was weary and haggard. Sherlock Holmes ran her overwith one of his quick, all-comprehensive glances.
2. "And she was seen walking with this very woman afterwards?""Yes. That is what Mr. Lestrade, of Scotland Yard, looks upon asso serious. It is thought that Flora decoyed my wife out and laid someterrible trap for her."
3. "Oh, the fellows evidently grabbed hold of everything they couldget."
4. "Thank you, I would really rather not."
5. "Yes; I rather think he is coming to consult me professionally. Ithink that I recognize the symptoms. Ha! did I not tell you?" As hespoke, the man, puffing and blowing, rushed at our door and pulledat our bell until the whole house resounded with the clanging.A few moments later he was in our room, still puffing, stillgesticulating, but with so fixed a look of grief and despair in hiseyes that our smiles were turned in an instant to horror and pity. Fora while he could not get his words out, but swayed his body andplucked at his hair like one who has been driven to the extreme limitsof his reason. Then, suddenly springing to his feet, he beat hishead against the wall with such force that we both rushed upon him andtore him away to the centre of the room. Sherlock Holmes pushed himdown into the easy-chair and, sitting beside him, patted his handand chatted with him in the easy, soothing tones which he knew so wellhow to employ.
6. "At last we have a clue!" he cried. "Thank heaven! at last we are onthe dear boy's track! It is his cap."

1. "To Miss Marie Devine. There is nothing to show where the checkwas drawn. It was cashed at the Credit Lyonnais at Montpellier lessthan three weeks ago. The sum was fifty Pounds."
2. "Pure swank!" Holmes answered. "He felt so clever and so sure ofhimself that he imagined no one could touch him. He could say to anysuspicious neighbour, 'Look at the steps I have taken. I haveconsulted not only the police but even Sherlock Holmes.'"The inspector laughed.
3. "It can only mean," said I, "that the object, whatever it may be,has only just come into the house."
4. "Tangey, the commissionaire, has been shadowed. He left the Guardswith a good character, and we can find nothing against him. His wifeis a bad lot, though. I fancy she knows more about this than appears.""Have you shadowed her?"
5. "When this was pulled down, the bell in the kitchen must have rungloudly," he remarked.
6. "Nothing to add?"

1. "Why?"
2. It was early in April in the year '83 that I woke one morning tofind Sherlock Holmes standing, fully dressed, by the side of my bed.He was a late riser, as a rule, and as the clock on the mantelpieceshowed me that it was only a quarter-past seven, I blinked up at himin some surprise, and perhaps just a little resentment, for I wasmyself regular in my habits.
3. "How did he come?"
4. "A purring cat who thinks he sees prospective mice. Some people'saffability is more deadly than the violence of coarser souls. Hisgreeting was characteristic. 'I rather thought I should see you sooneror later, Mr. Holmes,' said he. 'You have been engaged, no doubt byGeneral de Merville, to endeavour to stop my marriage with hisdaughter, Violet. That is so, is it not?'
5. Suddenly there was the momentary gleam of a light up in thedirection of the ventilator, which vanished immediately, but wassucceeded by a strong smell of burning oil and heated metal. Someonein the next room had lit a dark-lanten. I heard a gentle sound ofmovement, and then all was silent once more, though the smell grewstronger. For half an hour I sat with straining ears. Then suddenlyanother sound became audible-a very gentle, soothing sound, likethat of a small jet of steam escaping continually from a kettle. Theinstant that we heard it, Holmes sprang from the bed, struck amatch, and lashed furiously with his cane at the bell-pull."You see it, Watson?" he yelled. "You see it?"
6. "'He says that you know him, and that he only wants a momentsconversation.'

1. "Oh! a joke, was it? You won't find the laugh on your side, I promiseyou. Take him down, and keep him in the sitting-room until I come. Mr.Holmes," he continued, when they had gone, "I could not speak beforethe constables, but I don't mind saying, in the presence of Dr.Watson, that this is the brightest thing that you have done yet, though it is a mystery to me how you did it. You have saved aninnocent man's life, and you have prevented a very grave scandal, which would have ruined my reputation in the Force."
2. "Here you are!" he cried, waving a paper over his head. "I thought Ishould be in time to get you. Mr. Nathan Garrideb, my congratulations! You are a rich man, sir. Our business is happily finished and all iswell. As to you, Mr. Holmes, we can only say we are sorry if we havegiven you any useless trouble."
3. "I was, as Watson may have told you, in the Foreign Office, andthrough the influence of my uncle, Lord Holdhurst, I rose rapidly to aresponsible position. When my uncle became foreign minister in thisadministration he gave me several missions of trust, and as I alwaysbrought them to a successful conclusion, he came at last to have theutmost confidence in my ability and tact.
4、 "I mean to find her," said Sherlock Holmes. "I'm going throughthis house till I do find her."
5、 When I at last returned to the body I found that a little group ofwondering folk had gathered round it. Stackhurst was, of course, stillthere, and Ian Murdoch had just arrived with Anderson, the villageconstable, a big, ginger-moustached man of the slow, solid Sussexbreed- a breed which covers much good sense under a heavy, silentexterior. He listened to everything, took note of all we said, andfinally drew me aside.

"'Oh,' said she in her playful way, 'You said that you were onlymy banker, and bankers never ask questions, you know.'

Holmes looked at her with great interest.

"No doubt, Doctor; and yet the conversation may prove more importantthan the treatise. Incidentally, I may tell you that we are doingthe reverse of what you very justly blame, and that we areendeavouring to prevent anything like public exposure of privatematters which must necessarily follow when once the case is fairlyin the hands of the official police. You may look upon me simply as anirregular pioneer, who goes in front of the regular forces of thecountry. I have come to ask you about Mr. Godfrey Staunton.""What about him?"

"Now, if you will have the great goodness to open that door veryquietly, we will soon make him cut a much more respectable figure""Well, I don't know why not," said the inspector. "He doesn't look acredit to the Bow Street cells, does he?" He slipped his key intothe lock, and we all very quietly entered the cell. The sleeper halfturned, and then settled down once more into a deep slumber. Holmesstooped to the water-jug, moistened his sponge, and then rubbed ittwice vigorously across and down the prisoner's face.
