1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Had treated with the Serasker* Koorshid, who had been sentby the sultan to gain possession of the person of my father;it was then that Ali Tepelini -- after having sent to thesultan a French officer in whom he reposed great confidence-- resolved to retire to the asylum which he had long beforeprepared for himself, and which he called kataphygion, orthe refuge."
2. "My wife's brother is my brother," said Edmond; "and we,Mercedes and I, should be very sorry if he were absent atsuch a time."
3. "He is cold," said Debray.
4. "`"The deliberations had already begun. The members, apprised of the sort of presentation which was to be madethat evening, were all in attendance. When in the middle ofthe room the general was invited to remove his bandage, hedid so immediately, and was surprised to see so manywell-known faces in a society of whose existence he had tillthen been ignorant. They questioned him as to hissentiments, but he contented himself with answering, thatthe letters from the Island of Elba ought to have informedthem'" --
5. "Better than that!" replied Signor Pastrini, with the air ofa man perfectly well satisfied with himself.
6. To his friends M. de Villefort was a powerful protector; tohis enemies, he was a silent, but bitter opponent; for thosewho were neither the one nor the other, he was a statue ofthe law-made man. He had a haughty bearing, a look eithersteady and impenetrable or insolently piercing andinquisitorial. Four successive revolutions had built andcemented the pedestal upon which his fortune was based. M.de Villefort had the reputation of being the least curiousand the least wearisome man in France. He gave a ball everyyear, at which he appeared for a quarter of an hour only, --that is to say, five and forty minutes less than the king isvisible at his balls. He was never seen at the theatres, atconcerts, or in any place of public resort. Occasionally, but seldom, he played at whist, and then care was taken toselect partners worthy of him -- sometimes they wereambassadors, sometimes archbishops, or sometimes a prince,or a president, or some dowager duchess. Such was the manwhose carriage had just now stopped before the Count ofMonte Cristo's door. The valet de chambre announced M. deVillefort at the moment when the count, leaning over a largetable, was tracing on a map the route from St. Petersburg toChina.

1. "Was ordered to remain at Martigues."
2. "Count." said Danglars, "are you speaking seriously?"
3. "I demand admittance," said a loud voice outside the room,"in the name of the law!" As no attempt was made to preventit, the door was opened, and a magistrate, wearing hisofficial scarf, presented himself, followed by four soldiersand a corporal. Uneasiness now yielded to the most extremedread on the part of those present.
4. He waited silently, striving to pierce through the darkness.
5. "But, sir," said Hermine suddenly, "if all this is, as yousay, caused by M. Debray, why, instead of going direct tohim, do you come and tell me of it? Why, to accuse the man,do you address the woman?"
6. "Then the postscript is as favorably received by you as therest of the letter?"

1. "Yes; the dangerous and mad prisoners are in the dungeons."
2. "Yes, sire."
3. "These narratives were frequently the theme of conversationbetween Luigi and Teresa. The young girl trembled very muchat hearing the stories; but Vampa reassured her with asmile, tapping the butt of his good fowling-piece, whichthrew its ball so well; and if that did not restore hercourage, he pointed to a crow, perched on some dead branch, took aim, touched the trigger, and the bird fell dead at thefoot of the tree. Time passed on, and the two young peoplehad agreed to be married when Vampa should be twenty andTeresa nineteen years of age. They were both orphans, andhad only their employers' leave to ask, which had beenalready sought and obtained. One day when they were talkingover their plans for the future, they heard two or threereports of firearms, and then suddenly a man came out of thewood, near which the two young persons used to graze theirflocks, and hurried towards them. When he came withinhearing, he exclaimed. `I am pursued; can you conceal me?'They knew full well that this fugitive must be a bandit; butthere is an innate sympathy between the Roman brigand andthe Roman peasant and the latter is always ready to aid theformer. Vampa, without saying a word, hastened to the stonethat closed up the entrance to their grotto, drew it away, made a sign to the fugitive to take refuge there, in aretreat unknown to every one, closed the stone upon him, andthen went and resumed his seat by Teresa. Instantlyafterwards four carbineers, on horseback, appeared on theedge of the wood; three of them appeared to be looking forthe fugitive, while the fourth dragged a brigand prisoner bythe neck. The three carbineers looked about carefully onevery side, saw the young peasants, and galloping up, beganto question them. They had seen no one. `That is veryannoying,' said the brigadier; for the man we are lookingfor is the chief.' -- `Cucumetto?' cried Luigi and Teresa atthe same moment.
4. "My friend," said she, "how came you here? Alas, I would sayyou are welcome, had not death opened the way for you intothis house."
5. "Be it so!" said Villefort, raising his arms to heaven.
6. "Yes, sir, -- a fearful misfortune."

1. "I resolved to set out, and did set out at that veryinstant, carrying with me the beginning of my great work, the unity of the Italian kingdom; but for some time theimperial police (who at this period, quite contrary to whatNapoleon desired so soon as he had a son born to him, wishedfor a partition of provinces) had their eyes on me; and myhasty departure, the cause of which they were unable toguess, having aroused their suspicions, I was arrested atthe very moment I was leaving Piombino.
2. "My boy," said Caderousse sententiously, "one can talk whileeating. And then, you ungrateful being, you are not pleasedto see an old friend? I am weeping with joy." He was trulycrying, but it would have been difficult to say whether joyor the onions produced the greatest effect on the lachrymalglands of the old inn-keeper of the Pont-du-Gard. "Hold yourtongue, hypocrite," said Andrea; "you love me!"
3. "What can I know of him? He calls himself so. I, of course, give him the same title, and every one else does likewise."
4、 "Oh," said Monte Cristo, "I allow of no excuse. On Saturday,at six o'clock. I shall be expecting you, and if you fail tocome, I shall think -- for how do I know to the contrary? --that this house, which his remained uninhabited for twentyyears, must have some gloomy tradition or dreadful legendconnected with it."
5、 "No, sir," said Albert, coldly; "there are circumstances inwhich one cannot, except through cowardice, -- I offer youthat refuge, -- refuse to admit certain persons at least."

"Well?" said Villefort. "Go to the kitchen and get me somesyrup of violets." Villefort went immediately. "Do not bealarmed, M. Noirtier," said d'Avrigny; "I am going to takemy patient into the next room to bleed him; this sort ofattack is very frightful to witness."

"And I am Madame Heloise de Villefort." The count bowed withthe air of a person who hears a name for the first time."How grateful will M. de Villefort be for all your goodness;how thankfully will he acknowledge that to you alone he owesthe existence of his wife and child! Most certainly, but forthe prompt assistance of your intrepid servant, this dearchild and myself must both have perished."
